Why IT Must Go Green

As technology has advanced, and we have become more reliant on the power of computers, in so doing, we have effectively turned up the planet’s thermostat. Gartner estimates that carbon dioxide emissions related to the operation of servers and PCs account for 0.75% of the annual global total, and that’s before factoring in emissions generated by air-conditioning systems to keep all of these boxes cool.

Add to this the emissions that Information Technology produces, by way of all the telecommunications networks, and we find that the atmosphere’s greenhouse gas load is around 2%. Here is a scary fact, the emissions tied to the modern computer, are comparable to the level of greenhouse gasses being produced by all the world’s aeroplanes as they circle our globe.

We all do our part individually and as Companies in moving toward Green IT, we can reduce these statistics, lower the level of greenhouse gases and make wiser use of our earth’s resources. If we choose to run with Green IT, we will be lowering our running costs, increasing our profitability and sustainability, for ourselves and our planet.
